Depths of Grace

The John Newton Story

John Newton is remembered today for his compelling preaching, his strong stance against slavery, and for writing beloved hymns like “Amazing Grace.” What many might not be as familiar with, however, are his troubled beginnings.

John was a strong-willed and rebellious youth. He balked against his father’s guidance, tried to desert the Royal Navy, and spent time working on a slave ship. In spite of the depths of his depravity, John was later converted by the grace of God. His life was never the same.

The Abolitionist Movement

Amidst John Newton’s rebellious early years, he not only witnessed first-hand the atrocities of the African slave trade, but actively participated in it. This is something he lived to regret. Instead of wallowing in guilt, however, he chose to do something about it. Newton became an active ally of William Wilberforce, who led the parliamentary campaign to formally abolish the African slave trade in England. Just months before his death, the Slave Trade Act of 1807 was passed.

Though the slave trade no longer exists in the same capacity as it did in Newton’s day, slavery is still a very real problem in many parts of the world. You can learn more about the nature and prevalence of modern-day slavery below.
